Today’s globalized society is reshaping museology, with museums becoming pivotal in shaping local identity and attracting global visitors. The trend of funding historical museum refurbishments signals a departure from traditional architectural norms. Notably, entrances to historical museums are now placed underground, a shift explored in this thesis through a comparative study of the James Simon Galerie and the National Museum of Scotland. By examining the design philosophies of these museums, the thesis aims to understand the rationale behind this architectural trend and its impact on public spaces and the surrounding environment. It also acknowledges potential risks associated with undermining the institute's significance. Overall, the thesis seeks to offer insight into contemporary architectural values.

More so than ever, architecture in the modern era is shifting towards the expressive, focusing on appearance amidst mass media transformation. Buildings are beginning to prioritize exterior aesthetics and formal expression, especially in projects such as public buildings and cultural institutions. Buildings such as the Bilbao Museum are prime examples of transformative iconic architecture that transform local areas with symbolism and recognition. Their impact extends beyond mere aesthetics, contributing significantly to the economic development and urban regeneration of the cities they inhabit.

The primary focus of the project was to recognize the current urban condition within the context of Kreuzberg, Berlin. Rather than isolating the building as a standalone entity, emphasis was placed on understanding its broader impact on society, the local community, and the surrounding urban blocks.
